- You go to dance class??!! What type? Salsa?
- No, lindy hop.
- Lindy what?
Lindy hop is a type of couples swing dancing. I say one type because there are several: such as the Charleston, which is done individually; the Balboa, which came about when dance floors got so packed people could hardly move; and Blues, which is slower and more sensual.
After I give this little explanation I normally hear: Why do you do that?
I had been wanting to learn something new for a while, but I didn’t know what. Until one day I was walking by a park near my house and saw a group of people dancing to music from the 20s and 30s. They were all smiling.
And I thought: I want to do that.
I started classes in July. You can sign up without a partner and choose your role (leader or follower), regardless of gender. Little by little I got hooked on this totally addictive world.
Lindy hop is addictive. It’s simple, you can start dancing with just a few basics. It’s social, you change partners with each song so you get to meet lots of people. It’s healthy, not only because of the exercise but also because people do it to have a good time and enjoy themselves. Your level doesn’t matter as long as you have fun.
And, most importantly, you can do it anywhere.
Here’s an example. A message on social media, a square in the centre of Madrid, a speaker with music, and people.
